Mic Check 1 2 1 2. Is this thing on??
Week 8 in College Football lived up to the hype.
#1 Ohio State took on Michigan State in what some people said was a potential upset situation in Columbus. OSU's late turnovers almost let it happen. Luckily for the Buckeyes, Michigan State couldn't stop Beanie Wells down the stretch, or any other time for that matter. He rushed for 221 yards and a touch on 31 carries for a 7.0 average in the Buckeyes 24-17 win. Boekman to Ribiskie has become a familiar phrase in Ohio, and was called again for a touchdown this week.
#2 South Florida traveled to Piscataway, NJ to take on last year's USF, the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. Don't go to Rutgers on a Thursday night. Ask Louisville about that one. The Bulls decided to take their chances, and show up to no avail. "Someone stop Ray Rice." "Another fucking trick play? Who are they Boise State?" RR rushed 39 times for 181 yards and a touch in Rutgers 30-27 win. USF QB Matt Grothe threw the ball 17/34 for 247 1 TD/1 INT. He also ran the ball for another 58 yards and a touch. Really the game came down to one possible play, where Grothe hit Amarri Jackson down the right sideline to bring the Bulls across midfield with a minute left, but was called back because Jackson pushed off the corner, even though he didn't need to. I keep finding myself asking why they don't utilize Jackson's size (6'5) over smaller corners more often. National Championship hopes are near gone, but not the Big East title.
#3 Boston College was idle this week, but will play at Va Tech on Thursday night in a HUGE game.
#4 LSU played host to those OTHER Tigers in the SEC from Auburn. This game played out a lot like the LSU/Florida game. A tough, hard fought, classic SEC game. Auburn took a 10 point lead into the half and came out stagnant in the 2nd half. But, they did enough to keep LSU behind and needing a comeback at the end of the game to win. The Bayou Bengals were driving with less than a minute left. 3rd and 7 at the Auburn 22 with less than 10 seconds left. LSU, down 24-23, is holding a timeout and it looks like they'll call it to set up the game winning FG. But no, they snap it, Matt Flynn looks left the whole time and hits Demetrius Byrd in the endzone with 1 second left on the clock to give the Tigers a 30-24 victory. I was pleading while the ball was in the air. "Just bobble it. Don't catch it. You know you don't wanna catch it. you got no heart Byrd. You don't want it. SHIT. Man, I hate LSU."
#5 Oklahoma went on the road to take on Iowa State, in what was supposed to be a steamroller game, but proved otherwise. The Cyclones held tough, but in end the phenom Chris Brown's 2 second half TDs sealed the deal for the Sooners and they won 17-7.
#6 South Carolina played host to the Commodores from Vanderbilt this weekend. No second half needed, all the scoring was was the first half. Vandy beat a Steve Spurrier led team for the first time in...ever. Two FGs added by Ryan Succop in the 2nd quarter are the only points the Gamecocks put on the board in an embarassing 17-6 loss.
#7 Kentucky faced questions all week about how much gas they could possibly have in the tank after the triple overtime thriller last week. The answer: not enough. In a game that didn't lack any kind of points on the board, Tim Tebow stiff armed his way to the front of the Heisman Race. The kid went 18/26 for 256 and 4 TDs along with 78 rushing yards and a TD leading the # 15 Gators to a 45-37 victory on the road against an SEC East opponent. Kentucky QB Andre' Woodson also played like a monster going 35/50 for 415 yds and 5 TDs, although the last TD was a bitch move. Time ran out after the snap and every other team in the country would have just kneeled the ball, but the Wildcats were trying to pad Woodson's stats. Too bad they couldn't pad the one that really mattered: that W column.
# 9 West Virgina welcomed the Bull Dogs of Mississippi State to Morgantown and basically ran them out of town. As a team, the Mountaineers rushed the ball 42 times for 262 yds and 2 TDs in a 38-13 demonstation.
the #10 Ducks of Oregon went to Seattle to take on Washington in a Pac 10 game. Taking a tie game, 31-31, into the 4th quarter the Ducks turned it ..ping a 24 sport in the final frame to take the game 55-34. This comes on a day when Oregon rushed for a school record 465 yds. They ran for 6 scores, 3 of which came in the 4th.
UCLA hosted the #12 Cal Golden Bears in what was supposed to be a Cal win. UCLA has other plans, winning 30-21, and staying undefeated in the Pac 10. This comes as a complete shock, because UCLA is the team that got straight pounded by Utah with no lube. AND they gave Notre Dame their first and only win of the season thus far. The Pac 10 is starting to mirror the SEC, in it being a league where you have to come to play every. single. week.
#13 Kansas is doing a lot of things for the first time since '95. They went 6-0 to start the season for the first time in 12 years. Add to that, winning at Colorado. The Jayhawks held off the Buffalo, in Boulder, to win 19-14 and stay undefeated at 7-0.
Notre Dame sported the green jerseys this week against #14 USC in a hope to, I don't know, look different in a loss maybe? The Trojans spanked the Irish 38-0, leaving the Golden Domes without a home win this season with only 4 games left to play.
The #16 Mizzou Tigers welcomed the #24 Red Raiders of Texas Tech and their "no run" offense. Tech QB Graham Harrell threw the ball 69 times. He just threw 4 times as many INTs as he did TD, and that's not how you win. Mizzou's Chase Daniel went 14/19 for 211, a TD and a pick in the 41-10 destruction of Texas Tech.
#19 Virgina went to College Park, MD to take on the Terps, and things were a little closer than the Cavs would have liked. They need a late TD run by Mikell Simpson to secure the win, 18-17. Simpson had a solid day, rushing for 119 yds and a TD, while catching 13 balls for another 152 yds.
Things looked weird from the get go in #21 Tennessee's visit to Bama. Tide coach Nick Saban drew up an onsides kick, on the opening kick of the game. John Parker Wilson put up all american numbers, going 32/46 for 363 yds and 3 TDs. Bama WR DJ Hall proved that he is a grown ass man, catching 13 passes for 185 yds and 2 scores in the Tide's 41-17 murking of the Vols. This was the worst loss to Bama for UT since 1986.
# 24 Cincinnati traveled to Pitt to take on Dave Wandstedt and his Panthers. They took a nice 17-10 lead in to the half, and just didn't show up in the 2nd half, throwing up a goose egg, while Pitt came back and and won 24-17 with Wanny coaching from upstairs as he just had surgery on his achille's tendon. Maybe he should stay up there.
#25 Michigan was playing with out superstar Mike Hart against the Ron Zook led Illinois. Chad Henne went down with an injury early in the game, and came back to lead his team to a 27-17 victory. The Chad went 18/26 for 201, 2TDs and a pick. The Wolverines move to 6-2 on the year, and 4-0 in the Big 10. I'm calling this right now. Michigan WILL beat Ohio State. For the simple facts that they
A: Lost to App State
B: Will probably be undefeated in Big 10 play and would win the Big 10
and C: It would ruin Ohio State's shot at a nother loss in a championship game. But the Buckeyes should be used to that.
